1. Don’t make a mistake. Don’t wash your turkey prior to cooking it
It is believed that washing the raw turkey will kill any bacteria that can create food poisoning. If you don’t clean the turkey, bacteria could be spread to your kitchen. When handling turkeys everyone must clean their hands at least 20 times. The best way to eliminate bacteria in turkey is to prepare it to the appropriate internal temperature.

Do not allow your turkey to freeze on the counter. This will guarantee its safety. The ideal conditions for bacteria growth in a room temperature environment can cause serious illness to your family and guests.

If you decide to defrost the turkey in a bowl with water instead of the refrigerator, be sure to change the water each 30 minutes. This is suggested by the CDC to ensure safe temperatures and stop harmful bacteria from forming.

If you let your turkey sit on the counter or in the car for longer than 2 hours, it’s best to ensure your safety and purchase a new turkey.

You must ensure that the date you buy fresh turkeys at your local butcher, meat supplier or grocer is in line with the date you plan to cook your Thanksgiving meal. If the turkey was bought fresh, you will need to cook it right away. As per the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service the most amount of time you should allow for a fresh turkey to chill in the refrigerator for a period of 1-2 days.
